6th Annual Day of Caring brings mix of fresh and seasoned volunteers
Jun. 15, 2010
(Moncton – June 11, 2010) The sun was shining on more than 400 employees from firms across Southeastern New Brunswick as they stepped out of their normal work routines today to help 25 community agencies by doing over 50 projects during the 6th Annual United Way Day of Caring.
“You’re helping to build capacity to make this community the best that it can be,” Marc Doucette, President of the United Way of Greater Moncton and Southeastern New Brunswick, told volunteers at the kick-off breakfast. The breakfast was sponsored by the Atlantic Lottery Corporation, which is sponsoring Day of Caring in the Atlantic Region, and it was attended by over 340 volunteers.
Doucette was excited by the turnout, which has increased each year. “It’s amazing to have over 400 people from all walks of life come together to make the community stronger,” he said.
Doucette added that the event is successful every year because of the commitment of corporations and employee volunteers. “I thank all the companies involved for getting together, allowing their employees to participate in this day.”
Cook’s Building Materials of Moncton, a Home Hardware Building Centre, is among the firms donating supplies to this year’s United Way Day of Caring. Many other local companies dedicated to building strong, healthy communities provided goods and expertise to this year’s event, including Atlantic Lottery, Co-op Atlantic, Audubon Organics, ExxonMobil Business Support Centre, Major Drilling Group International Inc., Bell Aliant, Aliant Pioneers, Bank of Montreal and Asurion. The City of Moncton also contributed supplies and expertise to help with the day.
This year, there were lots of new faces, but even more familiar faces of seasoned volunteers. Rick Cook, of Cook’s Home Hardware Building centre, is on his 4th year of involvement. Cook says he continues to participate because the impact is long-lasting. “For 364 days, these organizations focus on what they do. This is our day to guarantee they can focus on their work the rest of the year,” he says.
Micha Fardy, the local United Way’s Director of Community Development, said the Day of Caring program offers a unique opportunity for groups of employees to provide hands-on support to agencies and organizations in our region committed to building strong, resilient communities.
The experience inspires many employees because they develop a deeper understanding of the vital social services in our community, many of which are funded by United Way, she said. Tasks of the day involved everything from painting, flooring, and cleaning, to creating Story Sacks, building and planting community gardens.
United Way combines the best mix of human and financial resources to support positive change for individuals, organizations, neighborhoods and communities. In 2009, more than $2.2 million was raised through the local United Way’s annual campaign.
