Local United Way Surpasses Campaign Goal, Reaches $2.2 million

Feb. 26, 2010

(Moncton, N.B. – February 26, 2010) – Representatives of the United Way of Greater Moncton and Southeastern New Brunswick announced today the non-profit organization surpassed its 2009 campaign goal by $100.000, setting a record by raising $2.2 million.

During the campaign “Touchdown” event held this morning at Moncton’s Dundee Sportsdome, 2009 Campaign Chair Marcia Gaudet said she was overwhelmed by the community’s generosity to the organization, which helps strengthen those most in need in the community by providing funding to 20 social service agencies as well as financial and non-financial assistance to many other community groups.

“Despite the continued difficult economic situation, citizens of Southern New Brunswick have done it once again. They have responded to the need and given most generously in donations and volunteer hours to their community. To succeed in achieving our financial goal in such times of restraint is a feat in itself, to surpass it is a true testament of what we are capable of together. It makes me extremely proud to be a part of such a caring community.”

At the campaign kickoff in September 2009, the United Way of Greater Moncton and Southeastern New Brunswick unveiled its highest goal to date – $2,100.000. The $2.2 million raised brings to almost $40 million the total collected by the local charitable organization since its founding in 1953. Last year the annual campaign brought in $2.1 million.

In addition to the release of 2009 fundraising results, today’s Touchdown event paid tribute to the many public agencies and corporations that ran campaigns for the local United Way last year.

ExxonMobil Business Support Centre Canada took honours as the top corporate sector donor. With a combination of employee payroll deductions, special events and a corporate donation, the firm raised a record $222,404. UPS came in second with an impressive donation of $154,213.

In the public sector, the Superannuation division of Public Works and Government Services Canada took top spot raising $64,771, while the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency placed second with $54,238, both through a combination of employee contributions and special events.

“All funds collected during the campaign stay in Southeastern New Brunswick, allowing the United Way to support groups and programs that help create positive change in our region,” said Gaudet. “One in three area residents will use United Way service in their lifetime.”

In addition to providing support to its 20 partner agencies – including Moncton Headstart, Family Service Moncton, the Canadian Mental Health Association, the Beauséjour Family Crisis Resource Centre, and local Boys and Girls Clubs – the organization aids 30 other programs in the region. The organization is also very involved in local initiatives aimed at dealing with issues such as poverty, food security, homelessness and the need to strengthen the non-profit community.
