A Profile of Our Youth
Dec. 10, 2010
Guess who is feeling good about their future?
Want to know who tells the truth even when it is not easy?
Who would you say is hoping you notice them and value them?
If you said our young people, then you are right! With the cooperation of School District staff, and the support of the municipalities of Moncton, Riverview and Dieppe, the United Way Our Youth First Committee conducted a survey this past spring with over 2000 students, grade six through twelve, in School Districts 1 and 2. Young people reported how much they have of the good things they need to grow up healthy, avoid risk-taking behaviours, and stay tough in tough circumstances.
To give you an idea about the questions above: 78% of young people report being optimistic about his or her personal future. 72% report have the positive value of honesty. 30% of young people receive that adults in the community value youth.
We did this survey first in 2001, then again in 2006. What’s new this time around in 2010?Well, you may want to check out the difference in grade 8 and grade 9. Or maybe you are interested in how boys measure up compared to girls when it comes to values.
And are proud to share with you that for the first time in North America, actually a “World Premiere,” we have had this survey developed by the Search Institute translated into French!

Finally, this survey is not just about numbers. There is a whole initiative behind this strengths approach, building these “assets.” And if you are interested in knowing more about it, or in taking action to help build these good things in young people, we want to hear from you. Our Youth First Committee has some amazing people and resources to help you make a difference in the lives of our young people today!
