Record number of volunteers take part in 5th annual Day of Caring

Jun. 12, 2009

(Moncton, NB – June 12, 2009) More than 400 employees from firms across Southeastern New Brunswick stepped out of their normal work routines today, braving the rain to help 30 community agencies by doing over 40 projects – from painting to planting and much more – during the 5th annual United Way Day of Caring.

“This year’s Day of Caring has seen an increase of more than 150 volunteers and has doubled the number of projects compared to last year,” said Marc Doucette, President of United Way of Greater Moncton and Southeastern New Brunswick Region. “We’re extremely impressed with the commitment of corporations and employee volunteers who make this event so successful year after year.”

Cook’s Building Materials of Moncton, a Home Hardware Building Centre, was among the firms donating supplies to this year’s United Way Day of Caring. Many other local companies dedicated to building strong, healthy communities provided goods and expertise to this year’s event, including Co-op Atlantic, Sobeys, Audubon Organics, MacArthur’s Nurseries, ExxonMobil Business Support Centre, Major Drilling Group International Inc., Bell Aliant, Aliant Pioneers, Fabulous Flooring and Dexter Construction. The City of Moncton also contributed supplies and expertise to help with the day.

Micha Fardy, the local United Way’s Director of Community Development, said the Day of Caring program offers a unique opportunity for groups of employees to provide hands-on support to agencies and organizations in our region committed to building strong resilient communities.

The experience inspires many employees because they develop a deeper understanding of the vital social services in our community, many of which are funded by United Way, she said.

“We have many employee volunteers who look forward to this event year after year,” said Fardy. “It’s hard work but a lot of fun. The employees realize that each and every one of us can help in creating a safe, supportive community.”

Corporate volunteers and United Way representatives kicked off the Day of Caring early Friday morning at the Moncton Lions/Lionettes Activity Centre before volunteers headed out to their assigned locations at community-based non-profit agencies in southeastern New Brunswick.

Before tackling a variety of “mini-makeovers” that involved everything from painting, flooring, moving and building to cleaning, mowing and planting, the employees took part in a collaborative art project, led by artist Reg Noel, that celebrates individual passion and community engagement.

United Way combines the best mix of human and financial resources to support positive change for individuals, organizations, neighborhoods and communities. In 2008, more than $2.1 million was raised through the local United Way’s annual campaign, funds used in southeastern New Brunswick to help strengthen those most in need by providing funding to 20 social service agencies as well as financial and non-financial assistance to many other community groups.
