THANK YOU!! Local United Way surpasses campaign goal, reaches $2.1 million
Feb. 27, 2009
Representatives of the United Way of Greater Moncton and Southeastern New Brunswick announced today that the non-profit organization surpassed its 2008 campaign goal by $25,000, setting a record by raising $2.1 million. During the campaign “Touchdown” event held this morning at Moncton’s Dundee Sportsdome, 2008 Campaign Chair Norval McConnell said he was overwhelmed by the community’s generosity to the organization, which helps strengthen those most in need in the community by providing funding to 20 social service agencies as well as financial and non-financial assistance to many other community groups. “Despite the economic downturn, citizens of Southeastern New Brunswick have really stepped up to the plate to support our region’s most vulnerable children, families, seniors and other individuals,” McConnell said. “We know that this is going to be a tough year for many so it was critical the 2008 campaign be a success. The fact we exceeded our goal means we can really help make a difference.”
At the campaign kickoff last fall, the United Way of Greater Moncton and Southeastern New Brunswick unveiled its highest goal to date – $2,075,000. The $2.1 million raised brings to almost $38 million the total collected by the local charitable organization since its founding in 1953. Last year, the annual campaign brought in $2.06 million.
In addition to the release of 2008 fundraising results, today’s Touchdown event paid tribute to the many public agencies and corporations that ran campaigns for the local United Way last year.
ExxonMobil Business Support Centre Canada took honours as the top corporate sector donor. With a combination of employee payroll deductions, special events and a corporate donation, the firm raised a whopping $196,277. UPS, which held the number one spot for an amazing 13 years, came in second with an impressive donation of $157,759.
In the public sector, the Superannuation division of Public Works and Government Services Canada took top spot raising $61,115, while the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency placed second with $53,388, both through a combination of employee contributions and special events.
“All funds collected during the campaign stay in Southeastern New Brunswick, allowing the United Way to support groups and programs that help create positive change in our region,” said McConnell. “One in three area residents will use a United Way service in their lifetime.”
In addition to providing support to its 20 partner agencies – such as Moncton Headstart, Family Service Moncton, the Canadian Mental Health Association, the Beauséjour Family Crisis Resource Centre, and local Boys and Girls Clubs – the organization aids 30 other programs in the region. The organization is also very involved in local initiatives aimed at dealing with issues such as poverty, food security, homelessness and the need to strengthen the non-profit community.
