Moncton Wins United Way Tri Community Challenge Other Mayors To Sweep Moncton City Hall Foyer Feb. 3

Jan. 28, 2009

The mayors of Dieppe and Riverview have a unique chore ahead as a result of today’s announcement that the City of Moncton has won the United Way’s annual tri-community challenge.

As per municipal tradition, Moncton Mayor George LeBlanc, Dieppe Mayor Jean LeBlanc and Riverview Mayor Clarence Sweetland agreed to a friendly competition last fall to see which municipality’s civic employees could raise the most money per capita during the United Way of Greater Moncton and Southeastern New Brunswick Region’s annual fundraising campaign.

United Way Executive Director Debbie McInnis revealed today that employees from the City of Moncton took top honours in the contest. In total, workers from the three municipalities raised $41,382 for the United Way – up from the $37,500 raised last year.

As a result of Moncton’s challenge win, Mayor George LeBlanc was able to pick a task to be undertaken by his fellow mayors.

To reflect the fact that Moncton will host the 2009 Ford World Men’s Curling Championship in April, Mayor LeBlanc chose to have his colleagues use curling brooms to sweep the foyer of Moncton City Hall.

“I look forward to having my colleagues brighten up the place,” joked Mayor LeBlanc.

The good-natured housekeeping event will take place at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 3, at the start of a fun day entitled “60 Sweeps until the Worlds”, being organized by those involved with the upcoming curling championship.

“I’ve got my broom ready to go!” said Dieppe Mayor Jean LeBlanc. “I’m happy to take part in the United Way challenge since the organization plays such an important role in improving the lives of so many people in our region.”

Riverview Mayor Clarence Sweetland agreed.

“The United Way does so much to build a strong community that it’s a pleasure to pick up a broom and do my bit in the spirit of community,” said Mayor Sweetland.

Norval McConnell, the United Way’s 2008 campaign chair, thanked the mayors for their gracious participation in the event.

“We’re so pleased that all three mayors were more than willing to get involved and help promote our 2008 campaign,” said McConnell. “The goal of the campaign is $2,075,000, with the results to be announced at our Touchdown on Feb. 27. The support of our area’s civic employees has definitely contributed greatly to our efforts!”

Funds collected through the United Way’s campaign provide base funding and program funding to 20 non-profit partner agencies in Southeastern New Brunswick, including Moncton Headstart, Family Service Moncton, Ability Transit, Crossroads for Women, South-East Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services, VON Moncton and local Boys and Girls clubs. The local United Way also provides financial and non-financial resources to other community-based organizations.
