UPS Charity Truck Pull To Test Human Horsepower Saturday In Moncton

Sep. 18, 2008

Teams of five will test their brute strength Saturday as they compete in a human truck pull competition being organized by United Parcel Service (UPS) in support of the United Way of Greater Moncton and Southeastern New Brunswick.

“There’s still time for corporate teams and groups from the general public to sign up,” says Karan Wood, Director of Customer Service for UPS Canada. “We have seven teams ready to pull, but we’re accepting registrations up until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 20. We’re looking forward to a really fun event that will help an organization that does essential work in our community.”

The charity truck pull will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday outside the UPS offices at Heritage Court, 77 Foundry St., Moncton. Prizes will be awarded to the fastest three teams to pull a 14,500-pound (6.6-tonne) UPS delivery truck (also known as a “package car”) a distance of 150 feet. Prizes will also be given to the team that collects the most pledges for the local United Way.

“We applaud UPS for yet again finding a unique way to help us help others,” says Debbie McInnis, Executive Director of the United Way of Greater Moncton and Southeastern New Brunswick. “UPS has been our top corporate supporter in terms of funds collected over the past 13 years, raising an incredible $160,000 in our last campaign. They’ve also proven how much they care about our community through the many hours of volunteer service their employees have donated to so many non-profit organizations. Thank you, UPS!”

The minimum entrance fee for a team of five in Saturday’s event is $250. Companies may enter their own team with their pledge, sponsor a team or donate to a team to support their fundraising efforts. Tax receipts will be issued.

Pledge sheets are available by contacting Gayle Hicks at ghicks@ups.com or 877-6578, Heather Gautreau at hgautreau@ups.com or 877-4937 or Catherine Ashby at cashby@ups.com or 877-4909.

Spectators are welcome at Saturday’s truck pull, one in a series that UPS has been conducting across Canada recently on behalf of United Way. Earlier this month, the United Way of Greater Moncton and Southeastern New Brunswick launched its 2008 fundraising campaign, unveiling its largest goal to date – $2,075,000. Founded in 1953, the organization supports front-line human care and social programs and services in the community.
