Community collaboration forum at Mount A — June 2 & 3, 2008

May. 20, 2008

Guest speakers include former MP Claudette Bradshaw and CECD founder Dr. J. Fraser Mustard.

A two-day conference entitled Creating Community Collaborations: A Rural-Urban Exchange will take place June 2 and 3, 2008, at Mount Allison University.

The bilingual event is for community non-profit organizations, voluntary groups and community stakeholders across all sectors to connect and learn from each other, says one of the event organizers, Debbie McInnis, Executive Director of the United Way of Greater Moncton and Southeastern New Brunswick Region Inc. (United Way of GMSENB).

“The forum is designed around the assumption that people already have within them the wisdom and creativity to confront complex challenging issues,” says McInnis. “By sharing best practices and successes, we’re hoping that people can build local solutions and collaborate in the best interests of their communities.”

The conference is being organized by United Way of GMSENB, the Tantramar Family Resource Centre, the Moncton Regional Learning Council and Mount Allison. Event sponsors include Atlantic Lottery, volunteer support sponsor.

Former MP Claudette Bradshaw, chair of the Premier’s Task Force on the Community Non-Profit Sector, and Dr. J. Fraser Mustard, founder of the Council for Early Child Development will be among the guest speakers. Dr. Mustard received an honorary degree from Mount Allison in 2007.

Participants will have the opportunity to take part in facilitated roundtable discussions on best practices in the areas of literacy, early and middle years, youth, and community food security.

Interested non-profit and voluntary organizations are also being invited to set up booths at the conference’s Information and Service Fair to share detailed information about services, programs and best practices.

There is a registration fee of $50 per person to help cover conference costs. Campus accommodation is available the evening of June 2 at a cost of $40 plus tax for a single room, $60 plus tax for a double. Subsidy forms are available to assist with costs.

For information on registration, or to book space for a booth at the Information and Service Fair, please contact Melissa Atkinson or phone 858-8600.
